The Ultimate House Training Guide

Ultimate House Training Guide Screen ShotThis practical guide helps you learn how to deal with some of the most widespread frustration faced by almost every dog owner: house training.

Is there any other part of owning a dog that has caused so much angst and dread?

There are many theories that have been shown to be just wrong.

There are many books that provide conflicting information about house training.

It doesn't matter if you look online, at the library or book store, talk to dog trainers or other dog owners. No one agrees on what works and you end up frustrated and still praying your dog will miraculously house train themselves.

What Makes This Book Different?

After scrounging through all the dregs out there, I stumbled upon this online book called "The Ultimate House Training Guide" by Martin Olliver. The book is aptly titled, for this volume does cover almost every aspect of house training you can dream of.

It is written in an easy, conversational tone that is simple to understand. It's sort of like having a conversation with a very helpful, knowledgeable canine behaviorist, but with the added benefit of being able to scroll back through it whenever you want!

This book is a welcome respite from the usual drivel available online and in other areas of "canine expertise"… it is informative, friendly and full of common sense.

There are no gimmicks, no marketing ploys or non-informative Q&A chapters. You don't even need a degree in canine behavior to realize that the author knows what he's talking about. Did I mention he is a veterinarian?

What Do I Get?

In Tools of the Trade (patience, persistence, consistence and common sense) with advice meant to boost the morale when you are that close to losing your cool over getting your dog to train properly.

It also gets right to the heart of the matter on house training with a very detailed section broken down for puppies and older dogs and each of the methods  that are recommended (paper-training, crate-training and the direct method).

Problems that frequently occur during house training are also covered… this section is very handy! There are a huge variety of issues that are covered in this section, from poop –eating to territorial marking. On top of all this, the author provides a case study for each problem which helps you understand why one thing works but another doesn't.

In the next section, they cover health problems. This area talks about congenital problems that your dog was born with, a section on problems related to diseases that occur in later life and a section on other house training problems like inappropriate outdoor elimination or how to cure burns in your lawn from your dog's urine.

In the Top Ten Tips for Hassle-Free House Training, the best tips are recapped, including attitude adjustments, practical tips and useful bits of general knowledge for training your dog.

Wow… It Sounds Like So Much…

It may sound like too much information to assimilate, but it is very easy to understand. The book is designed in a very logical format. The tone is light and conversational. There is no confusing terminology or leaps in logic in this book. The helpful illustrations also help the reader understand. They feature a charming little dog named Spot-Less.

Troubleshooting

One of the best parts is you have access to a free, personal email consult with the dog training team at Kingdom of Pets. If you need more help, just send an email and they'll get back to you with a personalized solution. They will also give you additional strategies to help you gain the upper hand in your house training.

In Summary

House training can be intimidating. It is probably the least favorite task for dog owners. The author's knowledge is helpful and reassuring, however and he breaks down the steps so even a first time owner can succeed. There are also extras included to tempt you further like checklists, do's and don'ts and how to deal with accidents. There is even a list of helpful training products.

In conclusion, this books gets two thumbs up from me. I found the information detailed, easy to use and reliable. The Ultimate House Training Guide will lead you down the right track so your dog will get through house training Spot-Lessly!

I am lucky, it has been a long time since I’ve had to house train a puppy! You are right how nobody ever seems to agree on what works and what doesn’t!
